Civil aviation is one of the most technologically advanced and highly regulated sectors of modern society, making a vital contribution to safety, economic development, international cooperation, and global connectivity. The continuous advancement of aeronautical science, combined with the regulatory framework developed under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and national aviation authorities (NAA), has shaped a global system characterized by a high level of safety and operational reliability.
The Hellenic Aviation Society was established in 2004 as a scientific, non-profit organization with the objective of promoting aviation science and supporting the development of a modern and safe aviation environment.
A fundamental element of contemporary civil aviation is the application of a systemic approach to safety management through the implementation and operation of Safety Management Systems (SMS). These systems are based on hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation, continuous monitoring of operational performance, and the cultivation of a positive safety culture throughout all organizations involved in aviation activities.
At the same time, the rapid growth of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and their gradual integration into the shared airspace, within the framework of European regulations and the U-space concept, create new operational opportunities while also introducing increased requirements regarding safety management, regulatory compliance, and the safe coexistence of manned and unmanned aviation.
Modern aviation is also characterized by the use of advanced digital technologies, the management of large volumes of operational data, the implementation of automation, and the integration of innovative solutions aimed at continuously improving safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Within this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a critical technological enabler for both the present and the future of aviation. Its applications include, among others:
- Analysis of large volumes of operational data to identify trends and potential risks;
- Support for decision-making processes;
- Optimization of air traffic management;
- Enhancement of proactive safety management;
- Operation of autonomous and semi-autonomous aviation systems; and
- Management of unmanned aircraft traffic.
The safe, reliable, and regulatory-compliant integration of Artificial Intelligence is a key priority for the international aviation community, ensuring that technological progress is accompanied by the maintenance and further enhancement of aviation safety.
In this regard, scientific knowledge, research, education, and cooperation among all stakeholders constitute fundamental pillars for maintaining and continuously improving aviation safety and development.
To support this objective, the Hellenic Aviation Society actively seeks cooperation with international organizations, aviation authorities, universities, research institutions in Greece and abroad, and members of the broader aviation community, contributing to the advancement of safety, knowledge, and scientific progress.
